The term comes from the English language and probably refers to bean, a colloquial term for the head, in German comparable to pear.

While both genders dress in them today, historically they were worn predominantly by men, especially workers who needed to avoid having their hair slip down their faces while working. Usually they had a small umbrella to protect the eyes from the sun. They can thus be seen as the forerunners of baseball caps.
